Assisted Guidance for the Blind Using the Kinect Device

Abstract
This paper proposes a real-time system to provide location based guidance and obstacle avoidance of blind persons in indoor environments. The system integrates navigation features based on visual recognition of markers and the detection and classification of possible obstacles in front of the blind person. The system uses the Microsoft Kinect sensor to acquire RGB-D images of the scene. The RGB camera provides input for a real-time tracking algorithm which identifies a trained set of wall-mounted visual markers. The user's pose is estimated combining marker information with GIS data. Depth information is used to classify nearby obstacles. The results of experimental tests with two blind subjects are presented and discussed. © 2016 ACM.

The use of sheep as a model for studying peripheral nerve regeneration following nerve injury: review of the literature

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injury and regeneration is a challenging scientific field with relevant clinical implications. Most peripheral nerve regeneration studies have been mainly carried out on rodents. However, it is important to note that the validity of the rodent as a model to study nerve injury and regeneration and translate these results into clinical practice has been questioned by several researchers. To overcome this problem, some investigators have used companion animals and large animal species as models for experimental peripheral nerve regeneration studies. Live sheep are often used in biomedical research because of availability, simplicity of care and housing, cost and body weight similar to humans and acceptance by society as a research animal. Despite these advantages, studies on nerve regeneration and repair in sheep have only been undertaken a few decades ago and compared to rat and mice experimental studies, there are much fewer investigations. The authors have compiled and sorted the available literature on experimental ovine nerve studies in order to guide the peripheral nerve investigator in choosing clinically relevant and interpretable models for studies on neural regeneration that are much needed in order to make progress towards new surgical and medical treatment of peripheral nerves.

Traffic Sign Recognition for Autonomous Driving Robot

Abstract
This paper introduces a fast Traffic Sign Recognition system developed for a robot, participant in the Autonomous Driving Competition in the Portuguese Festival of Robotics. The Autonomous Driving Robot performs detection and classification of traffic signs and traffic lights based on the analysis of images acquired by a camera mounted on its chassis. The proposed algorithm is composed of three processing stages: detection, pictogram extraction and classification. After the two firsts processing stages, a binary pattern matrix is obtained by color segmentation. In the classification stage two different neural networks were trained to recognize the traffic signs or the traffic light sign. Experimental results show that the system precision is very close to 100% whereas recall presents values above 90% in most of the signs. The proposed system also proves to be reliable and suitable for real-time processing.

Dynamic feet distance: A new functional assessment during treadmill locomotion in normal and thoracic spinal cord injured rats

Abstract
Of all the detrimental effects of spinal cord injury (SCI), one of the most devastating is the disruption of the ability to perform functional movement. Very little is known on the recovery of hindlimb joint kinematics after clinically-relevant contusive thoracic lesion in experimental animal models. A new functional assessment instrument, the dynamic feet distance (DFD) was used to describe the distance between the two feet throughout the gait cycle in normal and affected rodents. The purpose of this investigation was the evaluation and characterization of the DFD during treadmill locomotion in normal and T9 contusion injured rats, using three-dimensional (3D) instrumented gait analysis. Despite that normal and injured rats showed a similar pattern in the fifth metatarsal head joints distance excursion, we found a significantly wider distance between the feet during the entire gait cycle following spinal injury. This is the first study to quantify the distance between the two feet, throughout the gait cycle, and the biomechanical adjustments made between limbs in laboratory rodents after nervous system injury.

Implementation of CRM systems in Portuguese Municipalities

Abstract
Customer relationship management is a business strategy which dynamically integrates a set of services with the purpose of creating value for the organisation and for their customers. In Portugal, the 2009/2010 edition of Simplex for Municipalities', the action plan carried by the Portuguese government through the Secretary's Office of State for Administrative Modernisation, makes a commitment to promote a set of initiatives in order to help citizens using the public services. This process intends to reduce costs of context which burden the economic activities, making way for the modernisation of administration. Customer relationship management assumes a central role in this context. This paper presents the main results of a survey that was carried out with Portuguese municipalities, aiming a general characterisation of the adoption of customer relationship management systems, covering several aspects, from the motivations for CRM adoption to the obtained results. The improvement of the relationship with citizens and a higher information quality are some of the most important results obtained by municipalities.
