Abstract
Core diameter mismatch structures are proposed and experimentally investigated for curvature and vibration sensing. Two configurations are suggested, one approach uses a structure formed by splicing an uncoated short section of multimode fiber between two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs) single-mode-multimode-single-mode (SMS), combined to a fiber optical mirror at its end, and the other approach uses a structure made by splicing a section of SMF between two multimode fibers (SMSMS). In the curvature analysis, the proposed SMS sensor generates the destructive interference patterns when it is bent, varying only the attenuation of the optical signal without wavelength shifts. The SMSMS vibration sensor proved to be suitable to monitor very low frequencies such as 0.1 Hz. The configuration of the proposed sensors presents several interesting features, such as easy fabrication, low cost, high efficiency, and high sensitivity. These advantages make such sensors very useful in a wide range of applications, for instance, structural health monitoring.

Abstract
Long period fibre gratings (LPFG) have found an increasing interest due to the easy fabrication in any kind of fibre through the induced electric arc technique with low cost and flexibility. They have been used in applications such as gain-flattening and band-rejection, and for sensing strain, temperature and chemical and biological parameters. The sensitivity of LPFG increases when the fibre is coated with certain thin films. In this short review it is presented the recent developments and applications of these kind of sensors.

Abstract
In this work a numerical model related to an optical inclinometer is presented. This model is based on a fused fiber taper monitored in the transmitted power. Comparisons are made between the numerical and experimental results and it is demonstrated good agreement with them. Thus, the model is proven to be suitable to simulate variation of parameters in order to obtain better performance of the sensor response. The numerical results demonstrate that is possible to enhance the inclinometer sensitivity by varying the legnth and waist of the taper. It is obtained a sensitivity of about 0,7 dB/degree using a taper length and waist of 1200 mu m and 30 mu m, respectively, at an angular range of 35 to 45 degrees.

Abstract
The detection of dissolved carbon dioxide (dCO(2)) is made possible through a colorimetric effect that occurs in a sensitive membrane. The reaction with dCO(2) changes the pH of the membrane causing a small difference in its colour which results in a characteristic absorbance spectrum band near 435 nm. A sensing platform based on this effect was developed and tested in gaseous and in aqueous environments. It is a combination of a bundle of large core fibre optics (with diameters above 200 mu m) with light emission diodes (LEDs) in the visible range of the spectrum, a silicon photodetector and a polymer membrane sensitive to CO2. A variation in the absorption of 3 / %VV was obtained in the range from 0 to 1.6 % of gaseous CO2 with an estimated response time below 60 seconds.

SCIENTIFIC REPORTS

Abstract
The wine sector requires quick and reliable methods for Vitis vinifera L. varietal identification. The number of V. vinifera varieties is estimated in about 5,000 worldwide. Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) represent the most basic and abundant form of genetic sequence variation, being adequate for varietal discrimination. The aim of this work was to develop DNA-based assays suitable to detect SNP variation in V. vinifera, allowing varietal discrimination. Genotyping by sequencing allowed the detection of eleven SNPs on two genes of the anthocyanin pathway, the flavanone 3-hydroxylase (F3H, EC: 1.14.11.9), and the leucoanthocyanidin dioxygenase (LDOX, EC 1.14.11.19; synonym anthocyanidin synthase, ANS) in twenty V. vinifera varieties. Three High Resolution Melting (HRM) assays were designed based on the sequencing information, discriminating five of the 20 varieties: Alicante Bouschet, Donzelinho Tinto, Merlot, Moscatel Galego and Tinta Roriz. Sanger sequencing of the HRM assay products confirmed the HRM profiles. Three probes, with different lengths and sequences, were used as bio-recognition elements in an optical biosensor platform based on a long period grating (LPG) fiber optic sensor. The label free platform detected a difference of a single SNP using genomic DNA samples. The two different platforms were successfully applied for grapevine varietal identification.
