2009 SBMO/IEEE MTT-S INTERNATIONAL MICROWAVE AND OPTOELECTRONICS CONFERENCE (IMOC 2009)

Abstract
This presentation gives a review of the main concepts behind fibre optic sensing networks. Some important application areas are mentioned, such as the monitoring of oil fields, of large Civil Engineering structures, as well as of natural environments. Then, it will be addressed the potential relevance of this technology in domains of increasingly social importance, such as Health and Elderly Care, particularly in the development of Personal Health Systems.

FIBER AND INTEGRATED OPTICS

Abstract
A fiber optic sensing system for simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature, based on a hybrid fiber Bragg grating/long-period grating arrangement is described. The experimental results show that this setup has a good performance in terms of linearity and sensitivity, the ratiometric output changes 4%/0.001 RIU and 3.6%/degrees C, respectively. The sensor resolution for the refractive index is approximate to 2 x 10(-5) RIU. The simultaneous measurement of the refractive index and temperature was demonstrated. The sensing configuration has the ability to be read-out in reflection and works in the telecommunications window.

OPTICAL SENSING AND DETECTION II

Abstract
In our study, remote environmental sensing is presented using a standard optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). The measurement of environmental parameters using optical sensors is an expanding area of research with growing importance. Fiber optic sensors are an interesting solution for that due to their high sensitivity, small size, and capability for on-site, real-time, remote, and distributed sensing capabilities. Our multiplexing sensing scheme approach uses transmissive filters (long period gratings - LPGs) interrogated by the OTDR return pulses. The loss induced at the resonance wavelengths varies with changes in the environment refractive index, temperature or other physical parameters. Experimental results show that the insertion of an erbium amplifier improves the measurement resolution in certain situations. Further analysis show that a remote multiplexed sensing scheme allows us to perform simple and low cost real time measurement of refractive index and temperature over long distances.

SENSORS

Abstract
A review of refractive index measurement based on different types of optical fiber sensor configurations and techniques is presented. It addresses the main developments in the area, with particular focus on results obtained at INESC Porto, Portugal. The optical fiber sensing structures studied include those based on Bragg and long period gratings, on micro-interferometers, on plasmonic effects in fibers and on multimode interference in a large spectrum of standard and microstructured optical fibers.

Proceedings of IEEE Sensors

Abstract
A high birefringent D-type fiber loop mirror used as refractometer is reported. The D-type fiber section was etched by hydrofluoric acid (HF) being sensitive to the surrounding-medium refractive index allowing the measurement of different refractive indices in liquids. The refractometer was also tested in temperature, and simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature was demonstrated. © 2008 IEEE.

FIBER AND INTEGRATED OPTICS

Abstract
In the field of aqueous environment studies, long-period fiber gratings are very attractive for the real-time monitoring of physical parameters, such as temperature and salinity. However, due to the fiber jacket removal, these are fragile devices when applied in real conditions, where mechanical loads and contamination with algae and other organic materials must be taken into account. This work describes a refractive index sensing head that has been developed and characterized for in situ measurement of water salinity and resistance to hard conditions.
