Abstract
A magneto-optical current sensor, based on a low birefringence SF57 glass prism, using a dual quadrature polarimetric configuration was implemented and tested aiming its application in high voltage power lines. Sensor operation is characterized and compared using distinct Super Luminescent Diodes as optical sources, with emission at 650 nm, 830 nm and 1550 nm. Calibration and resolution are obtained in the different operating conditions using a DAQ board and full digital control for signal acquisition and processing. In particular, the sensor was tested in the range from 0 to 1 kA at 50 Hz. Also, operation at different frequencies from 50 Hz to 400 Hz was compared. A robust casing was fabricated in Nylon material enabling the portability of the sensor and its application in different types of conductors. Preliminary results indicate the feasibility of using the sensor both for metering and protection applications in high-power lines with interrogation via the OPGW cable.

PLASMONICS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE XI
Abstract
Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) is the base for some of the most sensitive label free optical fiber biosensors. However, most solutions presented to date require the use of fragile fiber optic structure such as adiabatic tapers or side polished fibers. On the other hand, long-period fiber gratings (LPG) present themselves as an interesting solution to attain an evanescent wave refractive index sensor platform while preserving the optical fiber integrity. The combination of these two approaches constitute a powerful platform that can potentially reach the highest sensitivities as it was recently demonstrated by detailed theoretical study [1, 2]. In this work, a LPG-SPR platform is explored in different configurations (metal coating between two LPG - symmetric and asymmetric) operating in the telecom band (around 1550 nm). For this purpose LPGs with period of 396 mu m are combined with tailor made metallic thin films. In particular, the sensing regions were coated with 2 nm of chromium to improve the adhesion to the fiber and 16 nm of gold followed by a 100 nm thick layer of TiO2 dielectric material strategically chosen to attain plasmon resonance in the desired wavelength range. The obtained refractometric platforms were then validated as a biosensor. For this purpose the detection of thrombin using an aptamer based probe was used as a model system for protein detection. The surface of the sensing fibers were cleaned with isopropanol and dried with N-2 and then the aminated thrombin aptamer (5'-[NH2]-GGTTGGTGTGGTTGG-3') was immobilized by physisorption using Poly-L-Lysine (PLL) as cationic polymer. Preliminary results indicate the viability of the LPFG-SPR-APTAMER as a flexible platforms point of care diagnostic biosensors.

Abstract
One of the major issues in the modeling of subwavelength optical materials resides in how to compute the effective properties of such media. An efficient technique must be able to describe appropriately the electromagnetic response of the overall structure. Within this context, this work is focused on the calculation of effective parameters of metallic silver nanowires embedded in alumina background. An algorithm based on modal propagation is considered in order to estimate the refractive index at the visible spectrum. The resonances obtained in the computing model are compared to the predictions of analytical Bruggeman and Maxell-Garnett theories and analyzed by regarding excitation of surface modes at the metal-dielectric interface.

FIFTH EUROPEAN WORKSHOP ON OPTICAL FIBRE SENSORS
Abstract
An evanescent wave fiber optic sensor for detection of E. coli outer membranes proteins (EcOMPs) is presented. The sensing probe is achieved by the functionalization of a Long Period Grating (LPG) inscribed in a single mode fiber (SMF28) with poly-L-lysine (PLL) resulting in a label-free configuration capable of specific recognition of EcOMPs in waters due to the resonance wavelength shift variation owing to refractive index changes of the medium (approximate to 100 nm/RIU). The sensing head was characterized and tested against EcOMP and applied to spiked environmental water samples. The sensor displayed linear responses in the range of 1x10(-10) M to 1x10(-8) M EcOMP and is regenerated (under low pH conditions) and the deviation of the subsequent detection was less than 0.1 %.

BIOSENSORS & BIOELECTRONICS
Abstract
An evanescent wave fiber optic sensor for detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) outer membranes proteins (EcOMPs) using long period gratings (LPGs) as a refractometric platform is presented. The sensing probes were attained by the functionalization of LPGs inscribed in single mode fiber using two different methods of immobilization; electrostatic assembly and covalent binding. The resulting label-free configuration enabled the specific recognition of EcOMPs in water by monitoring the resonance wavelength shift due to refractive index changes induced by binding events. The sensors displayed linear responses in the range of 0.1 nM to 10 nM EcOMPs with sensitivities of -0.1563 +/- 0.005 nm decade(-1) [EcOMP, M] (electrostatic method) and -0.1597 +/- 0.004 nm decade(-1) [EcOMP, M] (covalent method). The devices could be regenerated (under low pH conditions) with a deviation less than 0.1% for at least three subsequent detection events. The sensors were also applied to spiked environmental water samples.

Photonic Sensors
Abstract
A magneto-optical sensor, using a dual quadrature polarimetric processing scheme, was evaluated for current metering and protection applications in high voltage lines. Sensor calibration and resolution were obtained in different operational conditions using illumination in the 1550-nm band. Results obtained indicated the feasibility of interrogating such sensor via the optical ground wire (OPGW) link installed in standard high power grids. The polarimetric bulk optical current sensor also was theoretically studied, and the effects of different sources of error considering practical deployment were evaluated. In particular, the interference from external magnetic fields in a tree-phase system was analyzed. © 2012 The Author(s).
