Abstract
The work presented here describes the development and characterization of intensity fiber optic sensor integrated in a specifically designed piece of garment to measure elbow flexion. The sensing head is based on macrobending incorporated in the garment, and the increase of curvature number was studied in order to investigate which scheme provided a good result in terms of sensitivity and repeatability. Results showed the configuration that assured a higher sensitivity (0.644 dBm/deg) and better repeatability was the one with four loops. Ultimately, this sensor can be used for rehabilitation purposes to monitor human joint angles, namely, elbow flexion on stroke survivors while performing the reach functional task, which is the most common upper-limb human gesture. OPTICAL ENGINEERING

Abstract
A multimodal interferometer based on a new microstructured fiber tip is proposed for detection of the evaporation process of acetone. The new geometry consists of a capillary tube in which an offset Ge-doped core is fused and spliced at the end of a single-mode fiber. The fiber tip sensor structure was immersed in liquid acetone and the evaporation process of acetone was monitored in real time. Due to the refractive index variation of the external medium with increasing temperature, a short detection time of similar to 1 s was achieved. Abstract
A segment of a suspended-core microstructured fibre was dipped in a droplet of acetone and the evaporation dynamics of remaining acetone inside the cavity were simultaneously analysed with an optical microscope and an optical spectrum analyser. When the fibre is immersed it suffers a 14 dB signal drop. Different menisci form in each cladding cavity, with different evaporation times and rates. The signal restores its initial state not when the evaporation process is complete but after the collapse of a dominant meniscus.

Abstract
Interferometric fiber optic based sensors, namely those based on the Fabry-Perot (F-P) configuration seem very attractive for biomechanical and biomedical applications. The present study is focused on the proof of concept of two developed FP based sensors, for high and low pressure measurements of fluids. For low pressure sensor, it was used a polymeric diaphragm in a microstrutured fiber. It was obtained a good agreement between wavelength shift and the pressure, for the two tested sensors.

Abstract
This work presents a fiber CRD configuration for the measurement of strain. An Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer was used to send impulses down into the fiber loop cavity, inside of which a chirped fiber Bragg grating was placed to act as a strain sensing element. This technique could provide strain results with both conventional CRD-based configuration and the OTDR.

Abstract
This work presented a demonstration of the potential for a fiber based cavity ring-down (CRD) using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR). The OTDR was used to send the impulses down into about 20 km of a standard single optical fiber, at the end of which the fiber cavity ring-down was placed. The OTDR measured no appreciable losses, so other CRDs multiplexed could be spliced in parallel along the same optical fiber. To demonstrate the behavior and sensitivity of the proposed configuration, a displacement sensor based on a fiber taper with a diameter of 50 µm was placed inside the fiber loop, and the induced losses were measured on the CRD signal — a sensitivity of 11.8 ± 0.5 µs/mm was achieved. The dynamic range of the sensing head used in this configuration was about 2 mm. Finally, this work was also compared with different works published in the literature. © 2014, The Author(s).
