Industrialization of advanced optical technologies for environmental monitoring

Abstract
In this work, an innovative fully integrated monitoring infrastructure based on optical fibre sensors was developed and implemented. In the framework of the research project named PROTEU [Tecnologias Avan double dagger adas para a Monitoriza double dagger o de Sistemas Estuarinos e Costeiros (PDCTM/P/MAR/15275/1999)], an 11 km optical fibre cable with Bragg sensors each 500 m was installed from the lagoon mouth to Vouga river, along the bed of the Espinheiro channel, allowing the real-time measurement of water temperature at each sensor location. The results of this project are currently feeding several studies concerning Ria de Aveiro and the surrounding area and are crucial for a continuous assessment and management of the environmental conditions. Meanwhile, a fibre optic sensing system for simultaneous measurement of temperature and salinity based on fibre Bragg grating (FBG) technology was also developed. In the following sections, a complete description of the fabrication process, as well as theoretical and experimental results regarding this particular sensing system, are addressed. Earlier in situ local measurements, as well as the latest remote monitoring and data processing scheme, are described. The developed technology is now being exploited by FiberSensing, an INESC Porto spin-off company devoted to the development of optical fibre Bragg grating-based sensor systems for advanced monitoring applications. The main markets of the company are the ones of structural health monitoring in civil and geotechnical engineering, energy production and distribution, and environment.

Fiber Bragg grating sensing system for simultaneous measurement of salinity and temperature

Abstract
A fiber optic sensing system for simultaneous measurement of temperature and salinity based on fiber Bragg grating technology is presented. The fabrication process, which relies on chemical etching of the fibre, is described and its performance is evaluated. Theoretical and experimental results are given, which are summarized on the obtained resolutions of +/-0.06degreesC/ rootHz and +/- 0.2parts per thousand./ rootHz for temperature and salinity, respectively. Abstract
In this work, an all-fiber loop mirror using a clover microstructured fiber for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is presented. The sensing head is formed by a short piece of clover microstructured fiber with 35 mm length. The geometry of the fiber allowed observing different interferences created by the microstructured fiber core section. Different sensitivities to temperature and strain were obtained and, using a matrix method, it is possible to discriminate both physical parameters. Resolutions of ±2°C and ±11 µe, for temperature and strain, respectively, were attained. © 2012 SPIE.

Abstract
This paper presents a sensing head based on a Bragg grating written in an elliptical cladding Hi-Bi fibre partially exposed to chemical etching for reduction of the cladding diameter. With this sensing head geometry different strain and similar temperature sensitivities are achieved.

The application of hollow-core photonic crystal fibers for gas sensing is reviewed and discussed. Some problems with splicing to standard fibers and gas diffusion into the core are addressed. Current work at INESC Porto in the development of sensing heads and interrogation units is also reported.
