Using Virtual Choreographies to Identify Office Users’ Behaviour-Change Priorities with Greater Impact Potential on Energy Consumption

Abstract
Reducing office buildings’ energy consumption can contribute significantly towards carbon reduction commitments since it represents 10% of total energy consumption. Major components are lighting (40% of consumption), electrical equipment (35%), and heating and central cooling systems (25\%). Occupants’ behaviours impact these energy consumption components, with solid evidence on the role of individual behaviours. In this work, we propose a methodology that uses virtual choreographies to identify and prioritize behaviour-change interventions towards office users based on the potential impact on energy consumption. The data shows that some behaviours with significant consumption have little potential for behavioural change impact, while other behaviours hold substantial potential for lowering energy consumption via behavioural change.

Automatic generation of timelines for past-web events

The Past Web: Exploring Web Archives

Abstract
Despite significant advances in web archive infrastructures, the problem of exploring the historical heritage preserved by web archives is yet to be solved. Timeline generation emerges in this context as one possible solution for automatically producing summaries of news over time. Thanks to this, users can gain a better sense of reported news events, entities, stories or topics over time, such as getting a summary of the most important news about a politician, an organisation or a locality. Web archives play an important role here by providing access to a historical set of preserved information. This particular characteristic of web archives makes them an irreplaceable infrastructure and a valuable source of knowledge that contributes to the process of timeline generation. Accordingly, the authors of this chapter developed "Tell me Stories" (), a news summarisation system, built on top of the infrastructure of Arquivo.pt-the Portuguese web-archive-to automatically generate a timeline summary of a given topic. In this chapter, we begin by providing a brief overview of the most relevant research conducted on the automatic generation of timelines for past-web events. Next, we describe the architecture and some use cases for "Tell me Stories". Our system demonstrates how web archives can be used as infrastructures to develop innovative services. We conclude this chapter by enumerating open challenges in this field and possible future directions in the general area of temporal summarisation in web archives. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021. FEEdBACk: An ICT-Based Platform to Increase Energy Efficiency through Buildings' Consumer Engagement

Abstract
Energy efficiency in buildings can be enhanced by several actions: encouraging users to comprehend and then adopt more energy-efficient behaviors; aiding building managers in maximizing energy savings; and using automation to optimize energy consumption, generation, and storage of controllable and flexible devices without compromising comfort levels and indoor air-quality parameters. This paper proposes an integrated Information and communications technology (ICT) based platform addressing all these factors. The gamification platform is embedded in the ICT platform along with an interactive energy management system, which aids interested stakeholders in optimizing "when and at which rate" energy should be buffered and consumed, with several advantages, such as reducing peak load, maximizing local renewable energy consumption, and delivering more efficient use of the resources available in individual buildings or blocks of buildings. This system also interacts with an automation manager and a users' behavior predictor application. The work was developed in the Horizon 2020 FEEdBACk (Fostering Energy Efficiency and BehAvioral Change through ICT) project.

Abstract
Climate change affects global temperature and precipitation patterns. These effects, in turn, influence the intensity and, in some cases, the frequency of extreme environmental events, such as forest fires, hurricanes, heat waves, floods, droughts, and storms. In general, these events can be particularly conducive to the appearance of plant pests and diseases. The availability of models and a data collection system is crucial to manage pests and diseases in sustainable agricultural ecosystems. Agricultural ecosystems are known to be complex, multivariable, and unpredictable. It is important to anticipate crop pests and diseases in order to improve its control in a more ecological and economical way (e.g., precision in the use of pesticides). The development of an intelligent monitoring and management platform for the prevention of pests and diseases in olive groves at Trás-os- Montes region will be very beneficial. This platform must: a) integrate data from multiple data sources such as sensory data (e.g., temperature), biological observations (e.g., insect counts), georeferenced data (e.g., altitude) or digital images (e.g., plant images); b) systematize these data into a regional repository; c) provide relevant forecasts for pest and diseases. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can be a valuable tool for the identification and classification of images acquired by Internet of Things (IoT).
