Evolutionary algorithm made in INESC TEC strengthens its international position
The optimisation method entitled EPSO (Evolutionary Particle Swarm Optimization), originally designed by Vladimiro Miranda and promoted in INESC TEC by Leonel Carvalho, researcher of the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES) succeeds once again at an international level.

After winning in the past few years the IEEE Power and Energy Systems (PES) international competitions, now the algorithm excels in the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) competition, according to the announcement made in the WCCI 2018 - World Congress on Computational Intelligence, which took place in São Paulo, Brazil.
The first and second awards of the competition were conquered by Brazilian and Indian teams, respectively, using EPSO’s variants. Phillipe Vilaça Gomes, researcher of CPES and PhD telecommunications of the University of Porto, was ranked third due to his work developed in an original variant also of EPSO. The technological solution made in INESC TEC, therefore, contributing to increasing the reputation of Portuguese science and engineering, by prevailing in the demanding tests of these international competitions.
EPSO has won in several consecutive competitions, in its original form or in variants and hybrids. It has already been announced that the team of Leonel Carvalho/Vladimiro Miranda is in the top 3 of the new IEEE PES competition, in which the final result will be announced at the end of July.
