INESC TEC participates in final demonstration of project CARloS

Between 25 and 27 August, INESC TEC participated in the final demonstration of European project CARloS - CooperAtive Robot for Large Spaces manufacturing, which took place in La Coruña, Spain. The prototype of the robot was successfully demonstrated at the facilities of the shipyards “Astilleros Jose Valiña”, the end user of the technology and one of the project’s partners.

The robot CARloS is capable of autonomously performing stud-welding and marking the isolation panels inside the vessel, a highly repetitive task. Taking into consideration the fact that an average ship requires about two million studs, there is an increasing interest in robotics. The robot can also help mark the position of structures, such as extinguishers and pipes.

Besides the INESC TEC team, composed of Elisabete Fernandes, Carlos Costa, Héber Sobreira, Germano Veiga and António Paulo Moreira, all researchers at INESC TEC’s Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CROB), the event was also attended by representatives of the AIMEN Technological Centre (Spain), the University of Aalborg (Denmark), and the companies CAT Progetti (Italy) and DELTAMATIC (Portugal).
