INESC TEC receives “Best Conference Paper Award” in Vietnam

“Model Predictive Power Allocation for Hybrid Battery Balancing Systems” is the name of the scientific paper awarded at the “IEEE Vehicular Power and Propulsion 2019” (IEEEVPPC’2019) conference, which was developed by Professor Rui Araújo (INESC TEC) and Ricardo Castro, researcher at the DLR Institute of System Dynamics and Control. The conference was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, between 14 and 17 October.

20th November 2019

It was at this conference, which was organised by the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi, in Vietnam, and that was focused on electric vehicle batteries, that the international cooperation between INESC TEC and the DLR Institute of System Dynamics and Control (Germany) culminated in the recognition of the international scientific community.

Rui Araújo, from INESC TEC's Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES), explains what motivated this work, focused on the mitigation of battery imbalances of electric vehicles: "Batteries are composed of a large number of cells placed in series, which are prone to capacity, temperature and ageing imbalances, thus limiting the power supply”.

In this regard, the pair of researchers developed a new class of battery balancing systems. These systems, referred to as “hybrid battery balancing”, are capable of equalising battery capacity and temperature at the same time.

The researcher mentioned in this news piece is associated with UP-FEUP.
