SOOGREEN project was distinguished in Valencia

The SOOGREEN project, which was developed in collaboration with INESC TEC’s Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM), was distinguished with the CELTIC Excellence Award, an award that intends to highlight projects for their excellence in the areas of networking technologies, applications, and multimedia.

02nd July 2019

SOOGREEN, which came to an end in November of 2018, aimed at reducing the energy consumption of services and to improve the architectures of mobile networks while taking advantage of smart grids and using a holistic approach in terms of network, architecture, management and control components.

With the motto “Service-Oriented Optimization of Green Mobile Networks”, the project has achieved remarkable results in the energy efficiency area in the wireless networks and in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, thus having an environmental, economic and social impact. One of the relevant results was the reduction of up to 50% of the energy consumption of Wi-Fi networks, which currently carry 80% of the mobile access traffic to the internet.

This project, which has a funding of EUR 7793 000 and is coordinated by the French company Orange SA, had the collaboration of 16 partners from five different countries. In Portugal, INESC TEC and the Eurico Ferreira company were the partners of this project. The INESC TEC team that was involved in this project was composed of José Ruela, Nuno Almeida, Paulo Silva, Rui Campos, Saravanan Kandasamy and Tiago Oliveira.

It should also be noted that this year's awards ceremony, held on 19 June in Valencia, took place under the CELTIC 2019 event, which was co-located with the European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC) that will be organised by INESC TEC in 2021. The awards were delivered to the representatives and Coordinators of the winning projects by the CELTIC’s Chairperson, as well as by the national public authority of the country that coordinated the project.
