INESC TEC part of pilot experiment for underwater noise monitoring

South of São Miguel, in the archipelago of the Azores, three buoys spent 24 hours at sea collecting data - in this case, noise related to human activities that has an impact on the behaviour of cetaceans. For the first time, it was possible to collect information about underwater noise off São Miguel - more than 10 kilometres from the coast; INESC TEC joined this initiative.

INESC TEC researchers organised underwater location challenge at the Breaking the Surface 2024 conference

INESC TEC researchers organised and carried out a technical challenge at the international conference Breaking the Surface 2024 (BTS), which took place from September 30 to October 7 in Biograd na Moru, Croatia. This interdisciplinary event (currently in the 16th edition) focuses on robotics and marine technology. This year's edition brought together 198 experts and researchers from different areas (representing more than 20 countries), who exchanged knowledge and experiences in the field of marine robotics and associated applications.

Semear Digital: how INESC TEC can help make agriculture more profitable

The Semear Digital programme was established in Brazil but made its way to Portugal to support small and medium-sized farmers, equipping them with tools to improve profitability. INESC TEC, Embrapa, Associação Mobilizar com Valores (MCV) and Casa Escola Agrícola Campo Verde (CEACV) are the four institutions that participated in the seminar "Semear Digital no Contexto do Agro Luso-Brasileiro", which took place in September (Póvoa de Varzim).

Portugal at the forefront with new technology for measuring radon gas and improving global climate projections

For the next four years, INESC TEC will lead an international consortium with a budget of €2.6M, aimed at using advanced techniques to measure environmental radioactivity. According to estimates, by 2028, new technological solutions will be available that can improve both climate research - particularly in estimating greenhouse gas emissions - and radiological protection for the population and the environment.

INESC TEC takes part in a project to develop more efficient electric passenger ferry

Portugal is producing a zero-emission passenger ferry that is up to 80% more efficient than any current diesel ferry operating today: the MobyFly with its prototype MBFY10. This vessel’s efficiency is achieved using a hydrofoil system—a device similar to an aircraft wing— and advanced fly-by-wire software installed on the boat. The foils reduce hydrodynamic drag, allowing the vessel to “fly” above the water surface and achieve high speed with low energy consumption. For over two years, MobyFly has partnered with INESC TEC has partnered with MobyFly, Catana Group Portugal, and Corvus in the European FLYPASS Project to integrate advanced Corvus battery system technology and INESC TEC’s automatic-docking system into MobyFly’s ecosystem.

Europe plans to monitor and preserve insect populations – with INESC TEC’s support

A low-cost technology that integrates image-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect insects and identify potential threats to their existence. MOXOH was developed by INESC TEC and presented at a working meeting of InsectAI COST, an action promoted by the European COST programme that aims to accelerate the development of image-based and AI-assisted solutions to support the monitoring and preservation of insects.

Agricultural robot and INESC TEC technology acknowledged beyond borders

“We have some of the best robots in the world” is not an advertising; it’s an international recognition granted to INESC TEC. The institution participated in FIRA – World Agricultural Robotics Forum, the main international event for agricultural robotics and autonomous solutions and reached second place in the “Best World FIRA Robot” category with the Modular-E robot. In addition, our researchers also won second place in the “Hackathon GDRA” competition, with a prize of €2.5K – after completing the challenge of developing algorithms to circumvent obstacles.
