INESC TEC’s Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) is working on the European project APPS4aME – Engineering Apps for advanced Manufacturing Engineering, where the purpose is to develop a set of apps to support Manufacturing Systems Engineering in order to increase productivity and reliability in small series.

InstitutionalIn 2012, BIP featured several (good) news about researchers awarded for their work in different components. Literary awards, Best Papers Awards, winning projects and other distinctions, they all illustrate the research potential of this Associate Laboratory. The BIP team made a list of last year’s awards and we came up with a staggering number of 31 awards received by our collaborators. It is safe to say that excellence lives at INESC TEC!

InstitutionalCarlos Soares, a researcher at the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) at INESC TEC, received a Best Paper Award for two articles in which he describes the application of metalearning techniques to two different tasks: a priori selection of parameters for Support Vector Machines and selection of models for continuous flows of data (data streams).

InstitutionalOn the 21st March 2012 INESC TEC (coordinated by INESC Porto) received a European patent for an innovative logistics system developed by the Manufacturing Systems Engineering Unit (UESP) for assembly/manufacturing in footwear factories. The system has advantages, such as increased production, flexibility, the production of small series and reduced production time for orders.

InstitutionalOn 30th and 31st January INESC TEC received a visit from the SAB - Scientific Advisory Board following the last evaluation three years ago. The SAB is a group of leading international researchers that the Directors invite to evaluate INESC TEC and offer suggestions for the continuous improvement of the institute. The evaluation this year could not have been more positive: according to the SAB, INESC TEC has suffered exponential growth, it continues to strive for high-quality science and publications and it is an institute we should be proud of.
