Abstract
The proliferation of broadband wireless accesses has enabled the provisioning of multimedia communication services. Yet, the increasing demand for group-based multimedia services requires the development of new architectures capable of seamlessly delivering multi-party content and overcoming the prevailing heterogeneity and dynamics of current and next generation communication networks. In order to face these challenges we introduce UNIT, a solution that integrates multicast technologies for both core and access wireless mesh networks. UNIT is focused on the scalability and flexibility of the content delivery framework, adopting a hierarchical control strategy that enables seamless multi-party content transport over heterogeneous networks. Moreover, UNIT performs local reconfigurations of the content distribution tree in response to any context change, without impairing the remaining branches. The evaluation of UNIT in a real world demonstrator proves its feasibility and the efficiency of the proposed mechanisms regarding the control of the multi-party delivery trees.

Abstract
Enterprise Wi-Fi networks have been increasingly considering energy efficiency. In this paper, we present the Wi-Green project wherein we are investigating new techniques and innovative solutions that will allow the minimization of the energy consumption in Wi-Fi networks. In Wi-Green we will consider an enterprise network, in which there is equipment from different vendors, with different ages and different consumption profiles.

Wireless energy and communications in remote ocean areas: The ENDURE and BLUECOM+ projects

Proceedings of 3rd International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering, MARTECH 2016

Abstract
ENDURE and BLUECOM+ are two EEA Grants projects that aim at enabling the monitoring of large and remote ocean areas by providing wireless communications and energy to humans and systems, namely unmanned vehicles, which are crucial for making large scale ocean monitoring cost-effective. ENDURE targets enabling autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to remain in operation for longer periods of time than what is practical today, thus increasing the possibility of covering larger areas at lower costs. BLUECOM+ aims at connecting systems and humans in remote ocean areas by providing cost-effective, broadband, and reliable communications in alternative to satellite communications. Together these projects will bring up the enablers for data collection under the environmental monitoring programme, as well as to the achievement and sustainability of a GES in marine waters. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Abstract
Typical sensor networks are formed by low-end, battery operated devices, which rely on low-energy communication technologies, such as Bluetooth, Zigbee and ANT+, due to their energy efficiency. On the other hand, sensor networks increasingly need to be connected to the Internet, which implies adaptations of the TCP/IP stack to fit such wireless technologies. These adaptations bring additional complexity and imply new hardware, thus deployments are cumbersome and sub-optimal. Conversely, Wi-Fi is ubiquitous, can be seamlessly integrated with TCP/IP, and is energy-efficient with the right configurations; yet, its usage is still uncommon in e-health scenarios. For these reasons, we argue that a TCP/IP over Wi-Fi approach should be followed in e-health sensor networks. We propose a novel cross-layer, context-aware network configuration mechanism, which monitors the user and networking contexts and optimizes the configuration of the TCP/IP protocol stack accordingly. Our approach enables seamless integration between e-health wireless sensor networks and the TCP/IP backbone, while improving energy efficiency and reliability. © 2013 IEEE.

Abstract
The increasing trend in wireless Internet access has been boosted by IEEE 802.11. However, the application scenarios are still limited by its short radio range. Stub Wireless Multi-hop Networks (WMNs) are a robust, flexible, and cost-effective solution to the problem. Yet, typically, they are formed by single radio mesh nodes and suffer from hidden node, unfairness, and scalability problems. We propose a simple multi-radio, multi-channel WMN solution, named Wi-Fi network Infrastructure eXtension-Dual-Radio (WiFIX-DR), to overcome these problems. WiFIX-DR reuses IEEE 802.11 built-in mechanisms and beacons to form a Stub WMN as a set of self-configurable interconnected Basic Service Sets (BSSs). Experimental results show the improved scalability enabled by the proposed solution when compared to single-radio WMNs. © 2017 IEEE.
