Power and Energy Webinar Series – Operations research and AI for optimising electrical mobility services

The 15th “Power and Energy Webinar Series” will be organized on Thursday, October 27, at 2 PM (GMT+1), under the motto “Operations research and AI for optimising electrical mobility services”.

Carlos Silva, Researcher at INESC TEC, and Leonardo Bitencourt, Researcher in Electric Vehicles and Optimization, will be responsible for leading this webinar. David Rua, Senior Researcher at INESC TEC, will be in charge of the moderation.

About the presentations:

1- Data-driven services in EV charging stations

Recently, the number of charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) has been rising due to the increasing adoption of EVs. In an EV charging infrastructure, a Charging Station Management System (CSMS) is responsible for monitoring and managing charging transactions. Data that flows through the CSMS is valuable to design innovative data-driven services and, when combined with artificial intelligence and optimization techniques, can improve the performance of the charging station. An example of a data-driven service is a dynamic tariff mechanism, in which EV owners are targeted with incentives or tariff discounts to increase flexibility and shift their charging in time. Increasing the flexibility of EV users and the knowledge on their elasticity allows charging stations to optimize charging transactions, improve the integration of renewable energy and fulfill other important objectives.

 

2- Assessing the challenges and opportunities of electric mobility through the optimization of carsharing considering demand uncertainty

Although electric vehicle (EV) sales have been increasing over the years, worldwide EV adoption is still low. The key factors influencing this are the EV high acquisition cost and the reduced charging infrastructure. The e-carsharing business model might be an option to solve those problems and accelerate the transition to electric mobility. Thus, the objective of this work is to assess the profitability of an e-carsharing company based on distribution local marginal price (DLMP) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) that cooperates with the DSO through a two-stage stochastic model. The AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) is modeled using second-order cone programming (SOCP) linearized by the global polyhedral approximation. The IEEE 33 bus test system and a real Kernel distribution for the EV rental demands are used in four planning cases.

 

About the speakers:

  1. Carlos Silva, Researcher at INESC TEC

Carlos Silva received his M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 2018. He was a Research Fellow at the Mechanical Engineering Department, working with wind resource assessment and atmospheric flows. He also worked as a R&D Engineer in the renewable energy industry with focus on photovoltaics. In 2021, he joined INESC TEC as a Researcher at the Centre for Power and Energy Systems. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems at FEUP. His research interests include renewable energy systems and optimization.

 

  1. Leonardo Bitencourt, Researcher in Electric Vehicles and Optimization

Leonardo Bitencourt received the B.S. and M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Fluminense Federal University (UFF) in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He also received his Ph.D. at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) in 2022. He is interested in research topics regarding optimization, electric vehicles, power system, planning, and renewable sources. More specifically, he has studied the electric vehicle charging and discharging optimization, the charging stations siting and sizing optimization, and the impacts of electric vehicles and renewable sources penetration on the power grid.

 

About the moderator:

David Rua, Senior Researcher at INESC TEC – Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES)

Senior researcher and Assistant Centre Coordinator in the Centre for Power and Energy Systems (CPES). David`s research interests include modelling and optimization of flexible energy resource, digital platforms and systems for grid management, and control and demand response strategies for residential and non-residential buildings. He currently leads the x-Energy Management Systems area in CPES.
