UTM Lab meeting: Fast Handovers in 802.11 with 802.1X Reauthentications

Speaker: Prof. André Zúquete (Univ Aveiro/IT) The talk is about a fast, secure handover protocol for 802.11 networks. The protocol keeps the security functionalities of 802.1X but uses a new reauthentication protocol that promotes fast handovers during reassociations.

UTM Lab meeting: Fast Handovers in 802.11 with 802.1X Reauthentications

Resumo: The talk is about a fast, secure handover protocol for 802.11 networks. The protocol keeps the security functionalities of 802.1X but uses a new reauthentication protocol that promotes fast handovers during reassociations. The reauthentication protocol recovers the original 802.11 paradigm: authenticate first, reassociate next. Following this paradigm, two new 802.11 authentication and reassociation protocols where conceived, which allow a mobile station to perform 802.1X reauthentications before reassociations with the same functionality of a complete 802.1X authentication. Furthermore, reassociation protocols are authenticated, preventing denial-or-service scenarios that are not handled by 802.11i. This novel approach requires little from the environment, namely a new, central Reauthentication Service, for storing data used in the reauthentication of stations. The time of security-related tasks that contribute to handover delays was dramatically reduced to 1.5~ms, while an 802.1X fast resume takes more than 150~ms. Finally, the new protocol addresses most design goals and problems stated by standards' working groups for fast, secure roaming in 802.11.

UTM Lab meeting: Creation of Value with Open Source Software in Telecom Industry

We propose a framework for the creation of value with Open Source software that take to account the recent technologies in the field of telecommunication, take advantage of knowledge transfer as a competitive edge and the relationship between private companies, public entities and research centres. The validation of this methodology is based in the Osterwalder model, cases studies and feedback received from industry, OS community leaders and others stakeholders.

UTM Lab meeting: Wireless Communications Research at MIT: Advances and Challenges

Talk by Pedro Pinto from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Overview of the research pursued at the MIT Wireless Communications Group. The group has performed pioneering work on ultrawideband (UWB) radio, and provided a foundation for the design of UWB wireless networks. We will focus on the advances and current challenges in the fields of UWB synchronization, location-aware networks, network interference, channel characterization, and physical-layer security.

UTM Lab Meeting: Analysis of Harmony in Music Signals

Talk by Jan Weil from TUB - "In addition to melody and rhythm, harmony is a key feature of western music. Simultaneously sounding pitches forming chords, and sequences of chords forming cadences establish the tonal context of a musical piece. In this talk I provide an overview of my recent work on the analysis of harmony in music signals. This analysis yields a mid-level representation, for which exemplary applications are presented."
