Abstract
Worldwide competitiveness poses enormous challenges on managers, demanding a continuous quest to increase rationality in the use of resources. As a management philosophy, Lean Manufacturing focuses on the elimination of activities that do not create any type of value and therefore are considered waste. For companies to successfully implement the Lean Manufacturing philosophy it is crucial that the human resources of the organization have the necessary training, for which proper tools are required. At the same time, higher education institutions need innovative tools to increase the attractiveness of engineering curricula and develop a higher level of knowledge among students, improving their employability. This paper describes how Lean Learning Academy, an international collaboration project between five EU universities and five companies, from SME to Multinational/Global companies, developed and applied an innovative training programme for Engineers on Lean Manufacturing, a successful alternative to the traditional teaching methods in engineering courses.

Lean management methods in product development: A case study

Abstract
The current reality of intense competition has forced many companies to increase their performance and competitive advantages by pursuing innovation and improving and streamlining internal methods of designing products and processes. With shortening of product life cycle, in order for companies to survive, the need for a continuous stream of multiple innovations over time has arisen. However, the resources consumed by companies, whilst developing a product or process, are increasingly high, even in integrated approaches, and often the finished product or process arrives too late to provide the company with an edge over its competitors. Due to the large impact Lean philosophy has had in recent decades, within the manufacturing area, through the increase of efficiency and generation of continuous improvement, more companies have progressively applied Lean methods in their units of product and process development. This paper seeks to present a reference model for Lean implementation in the areas of product and process development in order to support companies in their path to streamline and make their innovative processes more efficient. The proposed reference model includes a concrete case study example that helps to explain the main concepts behind the proposed approach. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

The Dotted-Board Model: A new MIP model for nesting irregular shapes

Abstract
The nesting problem, also known as irregular packing problem, belongs to the generic class of cutting and packing (C&P) problems. It differs from other 2-D C&P problems in the irregular shape of the pieces. This paper proposes a new mixed-integer model in which binary decision variables are associated with each discrete point of the board (a dot) and with each piece type. It is much more flexible than previously proposed formulations and solves to optimality larger instances of the nesting problem, at the cost of having its precision dependent on board discretization. To date no results have been published concerning optimal solutions for nesting problems with more than 7 pieces. We ran computational experiments on 45 problem instances with the new model, solving to optimality 34 instances with a total number of pieces ranging from 16 to 56, depending on the number of piece types, grid resolution and the size of the board. A strong advantage of the model is its insensitivity to piece and board geometry, making it easy to extend to more complex problems such as non-convex boards, possibly with defects. Additionally, the number of binary variables does not depend on the total number of pieces but on the number of piece types, making the model particularly suitable for problems with few piece types. The discrete nature of the model requires a trade-off between grid resolution and problem size, as the number of binary variables grows with the square of the selected grid resolution and with board size.

PREDICTION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION INDICES IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

Abstract
Since the automotive industry is one of the most competitive markets, key players should be capable of evolving their management strategy from a reactive to proactive approach. This way, it is critical for this type of companies to explore a new performance management approach where an effective interaction between the strategic and operational layers should be achieved. In line with this vision, a framework is presented that helps stakeholders make decisions based on the ability to anticipate future performance behaviours. Using leading indicators as reference, the key idea is to structure and model the existing knowledge within a mathematical tool, in order to project the manufacturing system's behaviour into the future. In order to show the reliability and importance of this framework, this paper presents a research performed at an automotive plant. The aim is to model the factors affecting energy consumption and thus estimate the future behaviour in terms of sustainability issues.

Performance trends in the construction industry worldwide: an overview of the turn of the century

Abstract
This paper presents an exploratory study to assess the efficiency level of construction companies worldwide, exploring in particular the effect of location and activity in the efficiency levels. This paper also provides insights concerning the convergence in efficiency across regions. The companies are divided in three regions (Europe, Asia and North America), and in the three main construction activities (Buildings, Heavy Civil and Specialty Trade). We analyze a sample of 118 companies worldwide between 1995 and 2003. Data envelopment analysis is used to estimate efficiency, and the Malmquist index is applied for the evaluation of productivity change. Both methods were complemented by bootstrapping to refine the estimates obtained. A panel data truncated regression with categorical regressors is used to explore the impact of location and activity in the efficiency levels. The results reveal that the efficiency of North American companies is higher than the European and Asian counterparts. Other important conclusion points to a convergence in efficiency levels across regions as in North America productivity remains stable, whereas in Asia and Europe productivity improves.

An approach for integrated design of flexible production systems

Abstract
The paper presents a holistic methodological approach for designing flexible production systems, integrating the management of the production resources, operations planning, internal logistics and quality. The proposed methodology relies on lean principles and encompasses a series of stages and tools that may be used to design and to assess the robustness of the production system for tackling small series and frequent changes in the productive processes due to customized production. This approach has been applied to the redesign of the production system of a Portuguese machinery manufacturing industrial company. Results show that it effectively led to a new flexible production system and a new industrial layout capable of responding to diverse future scenarios of products demand. (C) 2013 The Authors.
