Abstract
In some industries, recruiting qualified resources can be a problem for SMEs, one option is to start a transformation process, and move from a traditional team to a distributed team, gaining access to a much larger base of possible human resources and business opportunities. Digital transformation can be used to help SMEs in taking the steps needed to become distributed companies. This paper shows how applying a lightweight TOGAF-based methodology to an ongoing digital transformation process, specifically targeting a SME information system, can create opportunities for the company.

Forty years of the European Journal of Operational Research: A bibliometric overview

Abstract
The European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR) published its first issue in 1977. This paper presents a general overview of the journal over its lifetime by using bibliometric indicators. We discuss its performance compared to other journals in the field and identify key contributing countries/institutions/authors as well as trends in research topics based on the Web of Science Core Collection database. The results indicate that EJOR is one of the leading journals in the area of operational research (OR) and management science (MS), with a wide range of authors from institutions and countries from all over the world publishing in it. Graphical visualization of similarities (VOS) provides further insights into how EJOR links to other journals and how it links researchers across the globe.

Collaborative smart process monitoring within virtual factory environment: an implementation issue

Abstract
The focus of this paper is to elaborate collaborative business process monitoring within virtual factory (VF) environment in a smarter way. This process monitoring is tracked through visualisation over a user interface such as 'dashboard'. This research briefly provides all aspects of implementing process monitoring through the dashboard user interface and explains technical aspects of monitoring. The dashboard features state-of-the art business intelligence and provides data visualisation, user interfaces and means to support VF partners to execute collaborative processes. With advanced visualisations that produce quality graphics it offers a variety of information visualisations that brings the process data to life with clarity. This data visualisation provides critical operational matrices (e.g. KPIs) required to manage virtual factories. Key reporting outputs such as KPIs and day-to-day operational data can be used to monitor and empower partners' processes that help to drive collaborative decisions e VF broker or partners' also retain full flexibility to create, deploy and maintain their own dashboards using an easy to understand wizard-driven widget and an extensive array of data visualisation components such as gauges, charts, maps, etc. Various technical aspects of this dashboard user interface portal are elaborated within the scope of this research such as installation instructions, technical requirements for the users and developers, execution and usage aspects, limitations and future works. In addition to the dashboard user interface portal this research also investigates the VF life cycle and provides architectural framework for VF. The research work highlighted in this paper is conceptualised, developed, and validated within the scope of the European Commission NMP priority of the Seventh RTD Framework Programme for the ADVENTURE (ADaptive Virtual ENterprise ManufacTURing Environment) project.

Implementing cyber-physical systems in manufacturing

Abstract
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are a new generation of systems that integrate computation and physical processes interacting with humans in different ways. Integrated networks of computers, sensors and similar technologies monitor and control the physical processes, reporting relevant data to planners and decision-makers, and vice versa. By means of case research, this paper analyzes the implementation of cyber-physical systems aiming at lead-time reduction in two manufacturing contexts, namely footwear and natural cork stoppers. The results of this research contribute to literature and practice with a conceptual framework for the implementation of cyber-physical systems and the discussion of the challenges of implementing this technology.

Autonomous Systems in remote areas of the Ocean using BLUECOM plus communication network

Abstract
The authors present a series of sea trails with autonomous systems using a long-range communication network. The continuous monitoring of the oceans and realtime data gathering/monitoring is a key issue in future marine challenges. To have long range communication, between land and ships at tens of kilometers', the authors used the BlueCom+ project research trials and tested their robotic systems. Bluecom+ project intends to fill the gap of long range communication with high bandwidth. It was demonstrated the usefulness of the system using autonomous systems, such as a small unmanned vehicle (ROAZ USV) for bathymetric mapping and tested an underwater acoustic positioning and communications system. © 2017 Marine Technology Society.

Underwater navigation sensors calibration in inland water spaces

Abstract
This paper describes the calibration of an underwater navigation system in enclosed scenarios. The work was performed in the context of the VAMOS project addressing the development of robotic solutions for flooded open pit mine exploration. An algorithm for calibration of extrinsic parameters for DVL and USBL systems is presented. Field experiments were performed with the ROAZ autonomous surface vehicle equipped with the underwater sensors and using precision IMU/GNSS fused data as groundtruth. The tests were performed in Douro River and in the Bejanca open pit mine, one of the VAMOS test sites, both in northern Portugal. The procedure was validated in the operational scenarios and results are presented showing the error correction and navigation quality improvement.
