Implementing cyber-physical systems in manufacturing

Abstract
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are a new generation of systems that integrate computation and physical processes interacting with humans in different ways. Integrated networks of computers, sensors and similar technologies monitor and control the physical processes, reporting relevant data to planners and decision-makers, and vice versa. By means of case research, this paper analyzes the implementation of cyber-physical systems aiming at lead-time reduction in two manufacturing contexts, namely footwear and natural cork stoppers. The results of this research contribute to literature and practice with a conceptual framework for the implementation of cyber-physical systems and the discussion of the challenges of implementing this technology.

Business process monitoring and management in virtual enterprise through interactive user interface layer

Abstract
This research provides mechanisms that facilitate to monitor and manage of Virtual Enterprise (VE) collaborative business processes in an efficient and effective way. First, it shows a self-contained process monitoring tool specification that contains the following main functionalities: events capturing from a workflow engine, business activity monitoring, process analytics and monitoring rules definition and evaluation. An interactive user interface layer in the form of dashboard is then highlighted within the scope of this research with the objective to monitor the VE operational processes. The dashboard will be the integration platform for a set of components that allow the establishment and operation of VE successfully. This platform enables a seamless integration of business processes and provides an endto-end ICT solution among the VE member organizations. The work presented in this paper is developed within the scope of the European Commission NMP priority of the Seventh RTD Framework Programme for the ADVENTURE (ADaptive Virtual ENterprise ManufacTURing Environment) project. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

Nonconformity tracking and prioritisation matrix: an approach for selecting nonconformities as a contribution to the field of TQM

Abstract
Selecting quality improvement projects among a variety of mutually competing ones is characterised by prioritisation. In practice, this is often done by the rule of thumb, following a single attribute criterion or by subjective preferences of individual stakeholders of a project team. An approach to track systematically nonconformities and to identify those critical ones that should be prioritised based on multi-attribute criteria is presented. The approach is introduced and its purpose is explained. After the background of relevant topics is given, the method's importance in research and for practitioners is derived. Steps of the approach are portrayed and an application case of a mature industrial company, integrated in the supply-chain of the automotive industry, is presented. Elements of quality tools and techniques are used as attributes, namely failure mode and effect analysis and Pareto diagram. Results based on industrial data indicate that the use of this approach contributes to support informed and structured prioritisation decisions, which foster a more efficient improvement of future quality-based projects.

Abstract
Innovation networks are seen as an important opportunity for organizational performance by facilitating the creation of new knowledge, not just transferring existing knowledge. Collaboration in innovation between manufacturing companies and research centers is a trend that continues to grow in importance linked to business success. Embedded in the literature on business models in the context of networks organizations, this paper propose key pillars and elements required in order to support the establishing of open business model for innovation networks. Subsequently the use of these elements in practice was verified through empirical research evidence in a case study.

Abstract
Many definitions for operations strategy appear in literature. Yet, after analysing some of these important definitions, there were some common denominators: planning and decision-making. It is through correct operations strategy planning and decisions that organizations achieve competitive edge, and for this reason, the subject is of major importance. In this paper we present a review on operations strategy (OS) in manufacturing, services and product-service organizations. Through the literature analysis we found several differences and fewer similarities between OS in manufacturing and services and also the positioning of product-service systems (PSS) OS, comparing to OS in manufacturing and in services. Our foremost contribution is providing a literature review and an analysis on the content of the OS frameworks.

Innovative costing system framework in industrial product-service system environment

Abstract
Product-service system (PSS) or particularly industrial product-service system (IPS2) is started to gain more attention as innovative strategy to face the competitive global market. Service aspect from IPS2 offering is believed could provide more values for customer than the standalone physical product. This new concept is not fully developed yet. There are some particular areas around IPS2 concept which are needed to be more explored and one of them is the cost dimension aspect. Cost is obviously important for company as basic information to support decision making process. Traditional costing system is no longer able to facilitate the company's transformation. The following work will present the analysis of current costing systems and a new assessment framework proposed to address the needs of IPS2 environment, particularly for IPS2 function-oriented business model. The proposed framework is developed based on the literature findings. Considering the specific characteristics of IPS2 business model, lean accounting is the best choice from current costing systems to be adjusted into the proposed framework. Lean accounting with its value stream costing (VSC) is able to provide comprehensive cost information to support company's long transformation journey towards a fully and successful IPS2 company.
