Interactive Systems: Design, Specification, and Verification

Abstract
The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospitals deals with patients in life critical conditions. The Intensive Care Information System (ICS) can therefore provide extremely important information to support medical doctors' (MDs) decisions. For instance, it is critical to manage well information about the evolution of a large amount of infections over time, about the antibiotics administered to each patient, and the impact on his/her life condition. Good quality information and interaction in such an extreme environment is therefore critical for helping MDs target well medicines to patients. This paper describes the initial stages of a project aiming at improving a real ICS, in particular from the interaction point of view, taking into account the stringent usability requirements from the MDs. Through a validated low definition prototype of the infection module of ICS, the paper proposes innovative active ways of providing suggestions to MDs on what actions to take.

Abstract
The Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of several Portuguese hospitals have been using the intensive.care information system (ICS) for the past three years. This system was developed under specification of Medical Doctors (MDs) from ICUs. As the main focus of the initial project was on adding functionality to the system, little attention was given to non-functional requirements such as usability. This paper describes the current ICS and the results of preliminary interviews with its main stakeholders to determine high-level functional and non-functional evolution requirements. The objective of the overall study is to propose usability requirements for such system, in particular from MDs and nurses, its main users. A prototype of an improved user interface will be evaluated to support the development of the next version of the system. The interviews with a key developer and several MDs resulted so far in the conclusion that ICS is a very helpful tool but requires improvements in several modules, such as Patient Entrance and Patient Evolution. However, more advanced modules, such as Infections Management, will also require some adaptations of work processes in ICUs, in order to benefit from the full support that ICS can provide.

EADOPTION AND THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY: ISSUES, APPLICATIONS, CASE STUDIES, PTS 1 AND 2

Abstract
This paper presents the INFOVINI project that aims to be the leading portal for the wine industry in Portugal. The basic idea is simple, yet powerful: to have a single entry point for all the latest information on Portuguese wines. The site will build upon the experience gained from a previous project, e-Mercatura, and will be based in an open platform that will enhance the collaboration between organizations in the sector. The innovative approach lies not only in the completeness of the database, which will be unique in Portugal, but also in the platform built in order to assure automatic update of the information. The INFOVINI project represents an extremely important contribution to a new way of working, promoting collaborative processes across organizations, and projecting a new image of Portuguese wines in foreign markets.

INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS: DESIGN, SPECIFICATION, AND VERIFICATION

Abstract
The UML is recognized to be the dominant diagrammatic modeling language in the software industry. However, it's support for building interactive systems is still acknowledged to be insufficient. In this paper we discuss and identify the major problems using the UML framework for interactive system development, specifically, in what concerns the architectural issues. Here we present a conceptual architectural model that expands the analysis framework of the Unified Process and the UML profile for software development processes. Our proposal leverages on user-interface domain knowledge, fostering coevolutionary development of interactive systems and enabling artifact change between software engineering and human-computer interaction, under the common notation and semantics of the UML.

EXPLORING SERVICES SCIENCE

Abstract
A good relationship between companies and customers is a crucial factor of competitiveness. The improvement of service levels has become a key issue to develop and maintain a loyal relationship with customers. This paper proposes a method for promotions design for retailing companies, based on knowledge extraction from transactions records of customer loyalty cards, aiming to improve service levels and increase sales. At first, customers are segmented using k-means and then the segments' profile is characterized according to the rules extracted from a decision tree. This is followed by the identification of product associations within segments, which can base the identification of the products most suitable for customized promotions. The research reported is done in collaboration with an European retailing company.
