Abstract
The visually impaired must face several well-known difficulties on their daily life. The use of technology in assistive systems can greatly improve their lives by helping with navigation and orientation, for which several approaches and technologies have been proposed. Lately, it has been introduced powerful online image processing services, based on machine learning and deep learning, promising truly cognitive assessment capacities. Google and Microsoft are two of these main players. In this work we built a device to be used by the blind in order to test the usage of the Google and Microsoft services to assist the blind. The online services were tested by researchers in a laboratory environment and by blind users on a large meeting room, familiar to them. This work reports on our findings regarding the online services effectiveness, the user interface and system latency. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Abstract
Online tools for dyslexic diagnosis and training are mostly: free-of-charge; children-oriented, consisting in a game-based interface proved a positive correlation between video games and dyslexia [1]; and, provide auto-evaluation questions that are automatically analyzed, given results regarding the need of seeking medical attention, since these tools are not a medical exam or diagnostic. Other platforms consist on exercises/tests for dyslexic people or with speech and language impairments, helping them in the training of the word pronunciation. Although, there is a lack of solutions that allow doctors to register the evolution of their patients. In this article, it is presented an accessibility and usability assessment of a Web platform that allows children to do exercises but also lets their doctors to keep track of their evolution through graphs and detailed statistics, allowing doctors to have information on a digital format, disproving the need for tests normally done on paper [2–4], and not having to manually register variables. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Abstract
Higher education is a complex business including very different process. At its core are the teaching and research processes and along the edge of the business model are the administrative processes, targeted to the students and alumni. Some of these processes translate into services that must be available during the whole life of the users and the institutions. For example, a higher education institution is expected to issue diplomas during the whole lifetime of its former students. In this context, we've been working in order to use the current e-government infrastructure of electronic services as building blocks for some of the features of the higher education institution electronic services. This work proposes the adoption of a set of those services. We've concluded a successful testing stage and expect to deploy a full production system very soon. Copyright

Abstract
Average life expectancy of the humans has been increasing with the advancement of medicine, hence observing an aging of the population in general. Associated with aging, loss of cognitive ability and memory failure are often observed, which can have a great impact on the quality of life and autonomy of people who need to take medication on an hourly basis. In this work, we present the development of an application that helps to manage two key issues for the quality of life of the elderly: the time of medication and the time of medical consultations. The application is managed (information is added, altered or deleted) by a responsible, as a family member or health professional. After analyzing several solutions, it was verified that the biggest problem identified is the difficulty of interaction with the interface (sometimes it presents a lot of information and do not focus on functions of immediate necessity). In this context, we present a solution that focuses on two main objectives: first, to present a clear and simple list of medication and list of information of consultations; and second, to provide a simplified interface for the management of medication by a caregiver (child, nurse, and tutor). In the first development phase, we evaluated the usability of this interface, with ten health care professionals, who evidenced the potentiality of the solution presented here.

Mobile Applications and Solutions for Social Inclusion

Abstract
The peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is characterized by leg pain during walking, and a recommended treatment for this disease is to perform supervised physical activity. In this chapter, a system that monitories the physical activity containing one application for smartwatch, one application for smartphone, and a back-end webservice is presented. The applications collect heart rate, GPS locations, step count, and altitude data. The methodology used for the development of the system was based on the agile method with the production of prototypes. In this chapter, four development cycles, which cover the users' and researchers' needs, are presented. In this work, the main objective is to evaluate the current mobile technologies on the physical activity data collection and the development of a system that assists the users to maintain an active life. © 2018, IGI Global.

UNIVERSAL ACCESS IN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION: VIRTUAL, AUGMENTED, AND INTELLIGENT ENVIRONMENTS

Abstract
Portugal, as part of the European Union, has general legislation regarding accessibility and inclusion for general purposes, particularly for education. There are several international and national initiatives, including some projects. However, disabled and non-disabled people still do not share equal opportunities. In this project a proposal for a remote class system is presented, which includes sign language interpretation, targeted at those students who cannot be physically present in the classroom and/or need sign language interpretation. The system is based on audio and video communication between the classroom, the student and an interpreter, so that the student can access and understand the content of the class in real-time, as well as be able to interact with the professor and classmates. A prototype is being developed in conjunction with the Portugal Telecom Foundation, which should be a step forward to a new full-featured service targeted at educational institutions and disabled students. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.
