Understanding Customer Experience with Healthcare Mobile Applications

Abstract
This study addresses the critical need to enhance patient’s experience with healthcare mobile applications. With the exponential growth of healthcare apps over the past decade, it is imperative to understand the patients’ perceptions of what is lacking and how healthcare mobile applications can be improved in terms of design, features, and communication between patients and providers, such as doctors or hospitals. This research was conducted in four phases: gathering insights into User-Interface (UI) and User-Experience, constructing a patient-focused survey, experimenting with various UI designs, and statistically analyzing survey responses about hospital mobile applications. Key findings from 82 responses highlighted the necessity to redesign both hospital app transaction processes and the apps themselves in terms of functionality and UI. Technological innovations like chatbots were underutilized due to the lack of affective computing in developing these features and a reported lack of user awareness. Regarding UI preferences, respondents favored larger text, less bold text, and blue as the primary color. Future developments should include direct communication with doctors and self-check-in features. Addressing these areas can significantly enhance patient satisfaction and engagement with healthcare mobile applications, particularly hospital apps. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Innovating in Nursing Education: A Game Prototype for Bridging the Gap in Family-Centered Care

Abstract
In recent years, there has been an increasing trend towards innovative and interactive learning approaches. Serious games have emerged as a promising solution in health education, offering engaging and immersive learning experiences. This article presents the development steps of a mobile application to promote knowledge of nursing assessment and intervention in the family. A prototype was developed for Android devices using React Native technology and Firebase database, incorporating gamification elements. It was then evaluated by potential users. The results showed that the proposed solution successfully enhanced nurses’ learning about family issues and dynamics, receiving positive feedback from users regarding its effectiveness and usability. By leveraging the power of mobile technology and gamification, this research work seeks to bridge an existing gap, contributing to the advancement of game-based educational approaches in the health field. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Gamifying the exploration of home mobility barriers for individuals with limited mobility: Scoping review

Abstract
As advancements in the health sector continue to improve, people are living longer and increasingly aging in place. However, aging is often accompanied by disabilities and mobility issues. Whether these issues develop gradually or suddenly, many homes are not equipped to accommodate such changes, resulting in significant mobility barriers. This document presents a systematic review focusing on three key areas: “Home Barriers and Modification”, “Accessibilities and Disabilities”, and “Gamification and Assistive Technologies”. The aim is to synthesize existing knowledge and explore the interconnections among these topics. The primary objective of this review is to examine how gamification can be utilized to identify barriers within the homes of individuals with disabilities. Despite numerous advancements and available technologies, the review reveals a paucity of research on the application of gamification in this context, highlighting a promising area for future investigation. Additionally, the review underscores the benefits of home modifications to enhance accessibility, emphasizing the potential for significant improvements in the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. © 2024 The Authors

Technological Resources for Physical Rehabilitation in Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy: A Scoping Review

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy often face challenges that reduce their physical function and quality of life. Technological resources offer innovative solutions for physical rehabilitation, but the extent of their application in this context remains unclear. This scoping review aims to explore and map the various technological tools used to support physical rehabilitation in cancer patients during chemotherapy, focusing on their potential to improve outcomes and enhance patient care. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidelines and the PRISMA-ScR framework. Comprehensive searches were performed in the MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and COCHRANE databases. The included studies focused on the technological resources used in physical rehabilitation for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Data extraction followed the World Health Organization's Classification of Digital Health Interventions v1.0 to categorize the technologies. Results: A total of 32 studies met the inclusion criteria. The most commonly used technologies included wearable devices (16 studies), web-based platforms and telerehabilitation systems (7 studies), mHealth applications (6 studies), virtual reality (2 studies), and exergaming (3 studies). These tools were designed to enhance physical function, manage treatment-related symptoms, and improve overall quality of life. Wearable devices were particularly effective for monitoring physical activity, while web-based platforms and mHealth applications supported remote rehabilitation and patient engagement. Conclusions: Technological resources offer significant opportunities for personalized rehabilitation interventions in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. However, further research is needed to evaluate the long-term effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and clinical integration of these tools to ensure broader accessibility and sustainable impact.

Optimisation for operational decision-making in a watershed system with interconnected dams

Abstract
In the energy production sector, increasing the quantity and efficiency of renewable energies, such as hydropower plants, is crucial to mitigate climate change. This paper proposes a new and flexible model for optimising operational decisions in watershed systems with interconnected dams. We propose a systematic representation of watersheds by a network of different connection points, which is the basis for an efficient Mixed-Integer Linear Programming model. The model is designed to be adaptable to different connections between dams in both main and tributary rivers. It supports decisions on power generation, pumping and water discharge, maximising profit, and considering realistic constraints on water use and factors such as future energy prices and weather conditions. A relax-and-fix heuristic is proposed to solve the model, along with two heuristic variants to accommodate different watershed structures and sizes. Methodological tests with simulated instances validate their performance, with both variants achieving results within 1% of the optimal solution faster than the model for the tested instances. To evaluate the performance of the approaches in a real-world scenario, we analyse the case study of the Cávado watershed (Portugal), providing relevant insights for managing dam operations. The model generally follows the actual decisions made in typical situations and flood scenarios. However, in the case of droughts, it tends to be more conservative, saving water unless necessary or profitable. The model can be used in a decision-support system to provide decision-makers with an integrated view of the entire watershed and optimised solutions to the operational problem at hand.

On the benefit of combining car rental and car sharing

Abstract
Car rental and car sharing are two established mobility concepts which traditionally have been offered by specialized providers. Presumably to increase utilization and profitability, most recently, car rental providers began to offer car sharing in addition, and vice versa. To assess and quantify benefits and drawbacks of combining both into a single mobility concept with one common fleet, we consider such combined systems on an aggregate level, replicating demand patterns and rentals throughout a typical week. Our systematic approach reflects that, depending on a provider’s status quo, different business practices exist, for example with regard to the applied revenue management approaches. Methodologically, our analyses base on mathematical optimization. We propose several models that consider the different business practices and degrees to which the respective new mobility concept is offered. To support mobility providers in their strategic decision-making, we derive managerial insights based on numerical studies that use real-life data. © The Author(s) 2024.
