Real Time Analytics for Characterizing the Computer User's State

Abstract
In the last years, the amount of devices that can be connected to a network grew significantly allowing to, among other tasks, collect data about the environment or the people in it in a non-intrusive way. This generated nowadays well-known topics such as Big Data or the Internet of Things. This also opened the door to the development of novel and interesting applications. In this paper we propose a distributed system for acquiring data about the users of technological devices in a non-intrusive way. We describe how this data can be collected and transformed to produce meaningful interaction features, that reveal the state of the individuals. We analyse the requirements of such a system, namely in terms of storage and speed, and describe three prototypes currently being used in three different domains of application.

Supervising and Improving Attentiveness in Human Computer Interaction

Abstract
The collection, storage, management, and anticipation of contextual information about the user to support decision-making constitute some of the key operations in most Ambient Intelligent (AmI) systems. When the instructor has a computer-based class it is often difficult to confirm if the students are working in the proposed activities. In order to mitigate problems that might occur in an environment with learning technologies we suggest an AmI system aimed at capturing, measuring, and supervising the students' level of attentiveness in real scenarios and dynamically provide recommendations to the instructor. With this system it is possible to assess both individual and group attention, in real-time, providing a measure of the level of engagement of each student in the proposed activities and allowing the instructor to better steer teaching methodologies.

Abstract
Attention is strongly connected with learning and when it comes to acquiring new knowledge, attention is one the most important mechanisms. The learner's attention affects learning results and can define the success or failure of a student. The negative effects are especially significant when carrying out long or demanding tasks, as often happens in an assessment. This paper presents a monitoring system using computer peripheral devices. Two classes were monitored, a regular one and an assessment one. Results show that it is possible to measure attentiveness in a non-intrusive way.

Abstract
Data has increased in a large scale in various fields leading to the coin of the term Big Data. Big data is mainly used to describe enormous datasets that typically includes masses of unstructured data that may need real-time analysis. As human behaviour and personality can be captured through human-computer interaction a massive opportunity opens for providing wellness services. Through the use of interaction data, behavioral biometrics can be obtained. The usage of biometrics has increased due to several factors such as the rise of power and availability of computational power. One of the challenges in this kind of approaches has to do with handling the acquired data. The growing volumes, variety and velocity brings challenges in the tasks of pre-processing, storage and providing analytics. In this sense, the problem can be framed as a Big Data problem. In this work it is intended to provide an architecture that accommodates the data pipeline of data generated by human-computer interaction, providing real time data analytics on behavioral biometrics.

Inferring Passenger Travel Demand to Improve Urban Mobility in Developing Countries Using Cell Phone Data: A Case Study of Senegal

Abstract
A rise in population, along with urbanization, has been causing an increase in demand for urban transportation services in the sub-Saharan Africa countries. In these countries, mobility of people is mainly ensured by bus services and a large-scale informal public transport service, which is known as paratransit (e.g., car rapides in Senegal, Tro Tros in Ghana, taxis in Uganda and Ethiopia, and Matatus in Kenya). Transport demand estimation is a challenging task, particularly in developing countries, mainly due to its expensive and time-consuming data collection requirements. Without accurate demand estimation, it is difficult for transport operators to provide their services and make other important decisions. In this paper, we present a methodology to estimate passenger demand for public transport services using cell phone data. Significant origins and destinations of inhabitants are extracted and used to build origin-destination matrices that resemble travel demand. Based on the inferred travel demand, we are able to reasonably suggest strategic locations for public transport services such as paratransit and taxi stands, as well as new transit routes. The outcome of this study can be useful for the development of policies that can potentially help fulfill the mobility needs of city inhabitants.
