INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRODUCTION RESEARCH

Abstract
Performance assessment is critical in today's competitive environments, where companies need to establish trade-offs between key competitive dimensions. The complexity of these environments calls for new approaches to performance assessment. Thus, in this work, we propose a novel conceptual framework for performance assessment in manufacturing environments combining different production strategies. Focus is laid on MTO/ETO combined environments and a three-stage problem analysis is considered. Firstly, a hybrid SD-DES-ABS model approach addresses the needs of a system that handles different types of orders, processes and workforce allocation requirements; secondly, the model results for different demand scenarios are assessed using a one-way ANOVA analysis followed by a Tukey - Kramer's test, with pairwise comparisons for assessment of significant performance variations under different system operating policies. A full factorial Design of Experiments (DOE) analysis follows, for determining the relevant process parameters influencing the system performance. As an example of application of the proposed framework, we consider the case of an advanced manufacturing company, whose manufacturing environment encompasses combined MTO/ETO production strategies.

COLLABORATIVE NETWORKS OF COGNITIVE SYSTEMS

Abstract
In mature countries manufacturing is one of the most significant sources of economic development and growth. In those countries, manufacturing transformation systems will be grounded on seamless collaborative environments and will have a high degree of flexibility in production, in terms of product needs (specifications, quality, design), volume, timing, resource efficiency and cost, being able to adapt to customer needs and make use of the entire network chain for value creation. Future transformations systems will be massively collaborative and will be enabled by a network-centric approach, making use of multidimensional data analytics, driven by advanced ICT and the latest available proven manufacturing technologies.

28TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FLEXIBLE AUTOMATION AND INTELLIGENT MANUFACTURING (FAIM2018): GLOBAL INTEGRATION OF INTELLIGENT MANUFACTURING AND SMART INDUSTRY FOR GOOD OF HUMANITY

Abstract
Despite the growing relevance of customization as a source of competitive advantage, the make-to-order (MTO)/engineer-to-order (ETO) manufacturing strategies have been neglected in the literature. Companies following these strategies deal with simultaneous customer-oriented projects that compete for and share resources, while coordinating interdependent engineering and production activities. It becomes relevant understanding the impact that different development projects and production variables have on the manufacturing system performance. For this, we propose a hybrid multi-dimensional simulation model, using System Dynamics (SD), Discrete Event Simulation (DES) and Agent-based simulation (ABS) for MTO/ETO performance assessment. Global Business Expansion: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Appl.

Abstract
The emergence of complex supply chains is one of the most important consequences of globalization. The management of these supply chains requires increased efforts by organizations that, on one hand, are increasingly pressured by customers in terms of service levels, on the other hand, must manage their suppliers from various locations and with different local requirements. In this context, an appropriate management of information flows is needed to create the adequate visibility level for managing supply chain risk. This chapter presents an overview on the concepts of risk management, visibility and information management in supply chains. This study proposes a conceptual framework for the selection of risk mitigation strategies in the supply chain and characterizes the external and internal information flows decision makers need to implement two categories of risk mitigation strategies: redundancy and flexibility. © 2018, IGI Global.

Abstract
The decision to adopt new technologies is the most important stage in integrating a new technology into the ongoing processes of the organization and also to obtain benefits from its routine use. This paper proposes an integrated framework that combines Diffusion of Innovations (DOI) Theory, Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework and Institutional Theory (INT) to characterize the critical factors influencing advanced technologies adoption in manufacturing context. This conceptual framework identifies three contextual environments - innovation, internal organizational and external environmental - that can influence the adoption decision along with some sub-contexts from the literature that may be considered. This framework can be used as starting point to explore in depth influential factors in advanced technologies in manufacturing contexts. Additionally, this framework can assist companies to develop adoption process plans as well as managerial practices that consider the role of these factors and thus lead to successful implementations.

Advances in Business Information Systems and Analytics - Handbook of Research on Expanding Business Opportunities With Information Systems and Analytics

Abstract
The digital economy is creating disruptions in traditional industries and markets. Industrial business associations (IBAs) may face serious challenges in a near future to meet the needs and requirements of their members, particularly in supporting their growing international trade activities and internationalization processes. Digital platforms are already transforming different types of businesses across all markets. An IBA may use a digital platform, not only to keep up with the current technological trends of markets, but also to improve the internationalization support provided to their associate small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to present the view of these potential digital platforms' managers, by presenting the results of an exploratory field research based on 24 interviews with IBAs from Portugal, France, and the UK. Another goal is to identify current digital platforms that are being used by IBAs and to critically evaluate their potential for supporting internationalization processes of SMEs. By using these findings, a set of requirements and features for digital platforms supporting SME internationalization in the context of IBAs are derived in this chapter. These results can be used by platform designers and by IBAs for designing and developing more effective digital platforms that can meet the specific internationalization needs of their users and managers.
