Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the expected role that variable speed hydro power plants can have in future electric power systems characterized by a massive integration of highly variable sources. Therefore, it is discussed the development of a methodology for optimising the operation of hydropower plants under increasing contribution from new renewable energy sources, addressing the participation of a hydropower plant with variable speed pumping in reserve markets. Complementarily, it is also discussed the active role variable speed generators can have in the provision of advanced frequency regulation services.

Abstract
Large-scale integration of distributed energy resources in low voltage distribution grids will have a serious impact on power system operation. The development of the microgrid concept is presented as a solution to overcome some of the negative impacts of massive microgeneration deployment. It has paved the way for an active network management approach within the smart grid paradigm. The microgrid concept is able to address the integration of geographically dispersed energy resources, thus avoiding significant technical problems that may affect the security of operation. Sizing and siting static synchronous compensator devices in the Portuguese transmission system for improving system security

Abstract
This study presents a methodology for siting and sizing static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) devices in the Portuguese transmission system in order to improve system security following severe grid faults. Security issues arise since the Portuguese transmission system incorporates significant levels of wind generation without fault ride through and reactive current injection capabilities during grid faults. As the transmission system operator (TSO) is responsible for assuring system security, the goal of the study is to take advantage of the proved STATCOM ability for injecting reactive current in order to mitigate the disconnection of large amounts of wind farms in case of severe grid faults. The proposed methodology was developed and tested in coordination with the Portuguese TSO and it is based on the formulation of an optimisation problem in order to minimise the installed STATCOM power while ensuring its compliance with the current grid code requirements, namely in what concerns to the system stability and security. Given the discrete and complex nature of the problem, a hybrid approach, combining both a heuristic method and an evolutionary particle swarm optimisation (EPSO) algorithm was developed. Results show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology as well as its robustness regarding the validity of the obtained solutions while facing the most severe operational scenarios.

Optimal bidding strategy for variable-speed pump storage in day-ahead and frequency restoration reserve markets

Abstract
Variable-speed pump power storage is an innovative large-scale technology that is being deployed across the world. In addition to price arbitrage and provision of downward replacement reserve, its operational flexibility enables the provision of frequency restoration reserve (FRR) both in turbine and pump modes. This work proposes a bidding optimization strategy for the participation in the FRR market. The proposed framework encompasses a medium-term module to optimally allocate the yearly natural water inflows, representation of electrical and hydraulic losses in the water inflow/power curves, as well as forecasting techniques to predict market prices and natural water inflows. Moreover, it does not assume prior knowledge of the amount of activated FRR capacity band. An evaluation module is also proposed to replicate the real operation of the power plant and enables an accurate calculation of the revenue. A comparison between fixed and variable-speed Pump storage power (PSP) units participating in the Iberian electricity market presented an increase in revenue of almost 12%. Due to the low liquidity of the FRR market in Portugal, and the considerable capacity of the PSP unit, under some specific situations, it might be necessary to cap the size of the FRR bid to decrease the difference between the expected and realized revenue.

Assessment of power step performances of variable speed pump-turbine unit by means of hydro-electrical system simulation

Abstract
The paper explores the improvement in ancillary services that variable speed technologies can provide for the case of an existing pumped storage power plant of 2x210 MVA which conversion from fixed speed to variable speed is investigated with a focus on the power step performances of the units. First two motor-generator variable speed technologies are introduced, namely the Doubly Fed Induction Machine (DFIM) and the Full Scale Frequency Converter (FSFC). Then a detailed numerical simulation model of the investigated power plant used to simulate power steps response and comprising the waterways, the pump-turbine unit, the motor-generator, the grid connection and the control systems is presented. Hydroelectric system time domain simulations are performed in order to determine the shortest response time achievable, taking into account the constraints from the maximum penstock pressure and from the rotational speed limits. It is shown that the maximum instantaneous power step response up and down depends on the hydro-mechanical characteristics of the pump-turbine unit and of the motor-generator speed limits. As a results, for the investigated test case, the FSFC solution offer the best power step response performances.

Abstract
This paper presents the study of variable-speed Pump Storage Powerplant (PSP) in the Portuguese power system. It evaluates the progressive integration in three major locations and compares the power system performance following a severe fault event with consequent disconnection of non-Fault Ride-through (FRT) compliant Wind Farms (WF). To achieve such objective, a frequency responsive model was developed in PSS/E and was further used to substitute existing fixed-speed PSP. The results allow identifying a clear enhancement on the power system performance by the presence of frequency responsive variable-speed PSP, especially for the scenario presented, with high level of renewables integration.
