Phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating for strain measurement at extreme conditions

Abstract
In this work, a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating is proposed for strain sensing at extreme temperatures. The grating structure is written in bare standard single mode fiber, using the point-by-point femtosecond laser technique. Strain measurements are performed at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 900°C. By subjecting the sensor to such extreme conditions, the wavelength of the grating increases. © 2014 OSA.

Control of the strain sensitivity using a suspended core photonic crystal fiber sensing head

Abstract
In this work a strain sensor based on a suspended core fiber is proposed. The sensor comprises a suspended core PCF between SMFs and is based on the multimode interference generated in these transitions. A strain sensitivity study for different sensing heads and stage separation lengths was carried out showing a sensitivity of -2.42 pm/mu epsilon for the best case. Also the sensing head was tested for curvature and temperature, showing in the first case that it is insensitive to curvature effects, and secondly, that for small sensor lengths it was insensitive to temperature variations.

Micro-Displacement Sensor Combined With a Fiber Ring Interrogated by an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer

Abstract
A micro-displacement sensing head based on two aligned cleaved fibers inserted into an optical fiber ring and interrogated by an optical time-domain reflectometry is presented. The sensor configuration is characterized for measuring both longitudinal and axial micro-displacements, showing a sensitivity of 0.07 and 2.67 dB/mu m for longitudinal and axial micro-displacements, respectively. A multiplexing system using two of these configurations is also studied.

Evanescent wave DNA-aptamer biosensor based on long period gratings for the specific recognition of E. coli outer membrane proteins

Abstract
An evanescent wave fiber optic sensor for detection of Escherichia coli (E. coli) outer membranes proteins (EcOMPs) using long period gratings (LPGs) as a refractometric platform is presented. The sensing probes were attained by the functionalization of LPGs inscribed in single mode fiber using two different methods of immobilization; electrostatic assembly and covalent binding. The resulting label-free configuration enabled the specific recognition of EcOMPs in water by monitoring the resonance wavelength shift due to refractive index changes induced by binding events. The sensors displayed linear responses in the range of 0.1 nM to 10 nM EcOMPs with sensitivities of -0.1563 +/- 0.005 nm decade(-1) [EcOMP, M] (electrostatic method) and -0.1597 +/- 0.004 nm decade(-1) [EcOMP, M] (covalent method). The devices could be regenerated (under low pH conditions) with a deviation less than 0.1% for at least three subsequent detection events. The sensors were also applied to spiked environmental water samples.

Evaporation of fluids in suspended-core fibres

Abstract
A segment of a suspended-core microstructured fibre was dipped in a droplet of acetone and the evaporation dynamics of remaining acetone inside the cavity were simultaneously analysed with an optical microscope and an optical spectrum analyser. When the fibre is immersed it suffers a 14 dB signal drop. Different menisci form in each cladding cavity, with different evaporation times and rates. The signal restores its initial state not when the evaporation process is complete but after the collapse of a dominant meniscus.

In vivo measurement of the pressure signal in the intervertebral disc of an anesthetized sheep

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to measure the intradiscal pressure signal of an anesthetized sheep under spontaneous breathing. An ultra-miniature fiber optic high-pressure sensor was implanted into the nucleus pulposus of the fifth lumbar intervertebral using a dorsolateral transforaminal approach. Results suggested the periodicity of the intradiscal pressure signal was similar to the mean respiratory rate of the animal. The average resting intradiscal pressure was also calculated and compared to available data. (C) 2014 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)
